Music Is Life

“Music has been used for millennia as a portal to the sacred dimension. Because music is experienced in the present moment, playing music offers an opportunity to connect to life as life experiences itself, in the flow of now.”

William Sage Music Is Life

Music Is Life is a studio residency series held at Elephant Collective Studio in Boulder that brings together improvisational musicians to connect to each other and to life through music.

The goal of the series is to drop into the flow and see where it takes us. To find and play with the pocket. To be present in heart and mind. To listen and respond to what’s happening. To make ourselves ready for magical moments and create structures for them to emerge. To have fun. To develop ourselves. To form and develop friendships.

The series takes places on select nights at a recording studio in Boulder. Set up starts at 6p and we hit the record button at 6:30 and play for two 90 minute sessions with a break in-between. Each session will consist of a number of explorations proposed by those present, or emergent from the group field. William Sage facilitates the group.

Participants are invited to propose structures or constraints within which the group will create either before the session or during. Participants are invited to bring all manner of instruments both analog and digital.

The intention is to keep the focus on feeling as the driving force. To this end explorations are intended to be mostly instrumental (including the instrument of the human voice). However lyrics are also welcome if they come from flow, and act as a vehicle for the underlying emotion.

We will have a recording engineer present at each session to capture whatever emerges and our intention is to lightly polish and eventually release any gems. We may also develop and work on structures in successive sessions to see what emerges.
